Community Wellness Centers: Bringing Healthcare to Every Louisville Neighborhood

Louisville faces a healthcare crisis hiding in plain sight. In our West End and South End neighborhoods, residents travel 30+ minutes just to see a doctor. Emergency rooms overflow with patients who couldn’t get a simple checkup. Preventable conditions become emergencies because help isn’t close enough.

That’s why Community Wellness Centers are central to my vision for Louisville’s future.

What Are Community Wellness Centers?

These aren’t traditional hospitals or clinics. They’re neighborhood health hubs that bring together:

  • Primary care – Regular checkups, vaccinations, chronic disease management
  • Mental health services – Counseling, crisis intervention, addiction support
  • Preventive care – Health screenings, nutrition counseling, fitness programs
  • Social services – Benefits enrollment, job training referrals, housing assistance

The Return on Investment

Research from Harvard and the CDC shows that every $1 invested in community wellness returns $2-3 in reduced emergency care costs. When people can see a doctor before a problem becomes an emergency, everyone saves – patients, hospitals, and taxpayers.

My plan allocates $12M for Community Wellness Center operations as part of the broader $185M community programs investment.

Where Will They Be Located?

We’ll prioritize neighborhoods with the greatest need – areas designated as healthcare deserts by federal mapping. The West End, South Louisville, and parts of the Highlands will see centers first, with expansion based on community input.

Jobs for Louisville

Each center creates 15-25 good-paying jobs – nurses, counselors, administrative staff, security. We’ll partner with U of L, Bellarmine, and JCTC to create training pipelines so Louisville residents fill these positions.

Healthcare shouldn’t depend on your ZIP code. With Community Wellness Centers, we’ll make sure it doesn’t.
