Use of Force Continuum

A framework showing escalating levels of force officers can use in response to resistance, from verbal commands to deadly force. Modern policing has moved away from rigid continuums toward ‘reasonableness’ standards that emphasize de-escalation. Officers should use the minimum force necessary and continually reassess as situations change. The continuum should guide training and discipline.
