Public Defender
Definition
A government-employed lawyer who represents people charged with crimes who cannot afford private attorneys. The Constitution guarantees everyone the right to an attorney, so public defenders serve indigent defendants. Louisville’s public defenders are overworked with caseloads 2-3 times national standards, affecting quality of representation. Adequately funding public defense is essential for fair justice, but it’s chronically underfunded statewide.
