Pretrial Services
Definition
An agency that evaluates arrested people for release before trial, monitors compliance with release conditions, and connects defendants to services (mental health, housing, employment). Good pretrial services reduce unnecessary jail detention of people presumed innocent who aren’t flight risks or dangers. Louisville’s pretrial system affects whether low-income defendants sit in jail for months awaiting trial simply because they can’t afford bail.
