GRYD (Gang Reduction and Youth Development)

Definition

Los Angeles’s comprehensive public health approach to gang violence, combining community engagement, prevention programming for at-risk youth, intervention services for current gang members, and violence interruption efforts – all operating separately from police suppression activities.

Why This Matters for Louisville

Areas served by GRYD had about 18% less violent crime than comparable areas, without relying on police suppression (Brantingham, Tita & Herz, 2021). This shows community-based approaches can work – a model for my wellness centers and violence prevention strategy.
